FHJ Prep K–8 Strings Program

I’ve had the privilege of teaching at FHJ Prep since 2023, helping students begin their musical journey with a curriculum rooted in the globally recognized Suzuki Method. This approach is built on the belief that every child can learn classical music as naturally as they learn language.

We provide high-quality instruments for all students through the Baroque Violin Shop’s school rental program. For advanced players, we also offer an honors ensemble designed to further develop their musical skills.

In kindergarten through second grade, students explore creativity using Alice Kay Kanach’s Playing From the Heart Violin Method. From third through eighth grade, they choose violin, viola, or cello and participate in grade-level orchestras, learning through the Habits of a Successful String Musician curriculum along with curated supplemental materials.

With a background in classical string education and graduate research focused on integrating technology into string pedagogy, I bring a creative and student-centered approach to the classroom. I use live looping to foster engagement and help students build rhythmic, technical, and improvisational skills. I also incorporate guitar to introduce harmony and blend elements of folk, jazz, and pop into a strong classical foundation. Drawing from my work as a session musician, I also introduce students to music production tools like Logic Pro, helping them rehearse creatively and understand how their playing fits into modern recording environments.

This program reflects my passion for helping students grow into creative, well-rounded musicians with a broad understanding of music across cultures and styles. And to have fun!
