Live Looping String Player

Interested in using loop pedals with your violin, viola, or cello?

I’d love to connect with you!

My story with loop pedals.

I use a Boss RC-600 loop pedal and a Boss ME-80 effects pedal to create original music and arrangements of cover songs. As an improvising musician, I blend elements from a diverse scope of genres, weaving between pop, fiddling, and modern jazz. My live looping arrangements and compositions have led to solo performances around the Nashville area to other parts of the country including San Francisco, California and Dallas, Texas.

My name is Caleb Yang and I’m a cellist based in Nashville, TN.

Since 2015, I have experimented with incorporating live looping in my arrangements, compositions, performances, and teaching. Over the years, I’ve become convinced live looping is an essential tool for every 21st century string player to explore technique development, creative practice ideas, arranging, composition, improvisation, participation in new musical genres, and groove.

I am passionate about helping string players use live looping for deepening musicianship and enjoying creative music making.

I’m also interested in the usage of live looping in private studio and group teaching settings. After completing my cello performance degree at UCLA studying under Latin Grammy winning cellist Antonio Lysy, I had the unique opportunity to study as a graduate student of commercial music with Tracy Silverman at Belmont University, where I got my Masters of Music degree. Tracy Silverman, known for his groundbreaking work with the 6-string electric violin, is named one of 100 distinguished alumni by The Juilliard School. With the mentorship from Silverman and my jazz improvisation teacher Dr. Bruce Dudley, I presented a lecture recital and published my master’s thesis titled “Creative Practice for Classical String Players with Live Looping”.

Below is a portfolio of my work on this subject. I hope to inspire you with my live looping related projects or connect in my brand new coaching program “Looping String Player Essentials Course”.

Thanks so much for being here!

“Creative Practice for Classical String Players with Live Looping”

ABSTRACT

In recent years, string pedagogy discussions have highlighted the greater need for creative practice as classical string players. Since the second half of the nineteenth century, string methods have shifted towards a limited scope of improvisatory techniques, parallelling the decline of improvisation in Western classical music performance practices. This thesis explores live looping as a practice tool to facilitate learning concepts and help string players develop musicianship skills including improvisation, participate in non-classical genres, and explore their creative voices. Examining the results of string educators that incorporate live looping into their own teaching reveals the tool’s effectiveness in bridging curricula standards with opportunities for avenues of creativity and endless experimentation. Ultimately, live looping can help string players learn a concept more deeply, employing scaffolding techniques to practice abstract models and thus relying less on any specific example such as learning from sheet music. This encourages a broader musical foundation enabling classical string players to feel more equipped in areas beyond their comfort zones and participate in and enjoy a wider range of musically fulfilling experiences.
